Advanced Drama COURSE EXPECTATIONS McKillip
- Advanced Drama is a performance-oriented class. A large part of each semester is focused on rehearsal and performance of student-directed and -acted pieces, as well as a full-length play. Students can also expect to advance their skills and knowledge of theatre through work with research, scenes and analysis.
- Please record in your planner the following dates:
- December 6-8 — 3:30 pm, Final dress of the class Winter Play (TBA)
- December 9-10 — 7:00 curtain, Performances of class Winter Play
- April 25-28 – 3:30 pm, Final dress of class Showcase
- April 29-30 – 6:00pm call (7pm curtain), Performances for Showcase
- February 11-12, Northern Nevada Theatre Festival at Damonte Ranch HS (attendance required)
- Students are expected to conduct themselves in the theatre in ways that are respectful and safe. Students are expected to come to class prepared for the day. Students are expected to follow all McQueen HS and WCSD policies and rules. Consequences: 1st time—Warning; 2nd time—Lunch detention and parent contact; 3rd time—30 minutes after school detention and parent contact (student and parent must arrange transportation home). If the student continues with disrespectful or unsafe behavior, or is continually unprepared for class, the student will be referred to the office for appropriate disciplinary action.
- Attending and critiquing live theatrical productions is an important part of learning about drama. Students are expected to attend one production each semester and provide a written critique of each.
- Students will have the opportunity to join McQueen High School’s International Thespian Society Troupe # (a.k.a. Drama Club). The ITS is the student branch of the Educational Theatre Association, an organization dedicated to supporting theatre in our schools. Meetings are expected to take place Tuesdays at lunch in the Theatre. Students also will have the opportunity (not required) to audition for extra-curricular productions: This fall: Murder in the Knife Room; this spring: Guys and Dolls
- Students must complete homework in a timely manner. Most “homework” in theatre consists of memorization; therefore, there is not a minimum homework load per week. Students should use their planners to keep track of assignments and due dates. Memorization can also be accomplished during the student’s Instructional Center.
- Deadlines are important. Due dates established in advance for any assignment, performance, or project are held firm; if the student is absent on the due date, the work is due the day the student returns to school. When students are absent for in-class work, the school policy for make-up work applies (see student planner). Performances in class carry extra weight in the calculation of grades. Missing a performance has an extremely negative effect on the overall course grade.
- Grading for this course will be a point-based system with the following percentage scale: 93-100 = A; 83-89 = B; 73-79 = C; 63-69 = D; 0-59 = F
